SACRAMENTO SUZUKI PIANO BASICS TEACHER WORKSHOP
In honor of Dr. Haruko Kataoka (1927-2004)
August 8-12, 2004
Sacramento Convention Center, Room 204
Dr. Haruko Kataoka first came to Sacramento in the summer of 1989. Every year since then, she continued teaching teachers, students and parents conducting workshops and 10-Piano Concerts in Sacramento. She worked tirelessly during her stay, sharing her knowledge and experience with everyone and anyone who wanted to learn.
We miss her deeply. We must keep her legacy alive. We must continue to work and research together and improve ourselves for the coming generations.
We are grateful to all the teachers from allover the world who came and brought students to Sacramento to study with Dr. Kataoka in all the past years. Unfortunately, because of her death on January 10,2004, we must now learn and teach without her. We know she would have wanted us to continue, so we are going on with the workshop.
This workshop is really unique. It will be an opportunity for teachers to observe other Piano Basics teachers try to teach the basics as taught by Dr. Kataoka. This is an "experimental research" workshop.
TEACHERS: All teachers who studied regularly with Dr. Kataoka (one should have had at
least 20 lessons with her) are invited and encouraged to sign up to teach teachers and/or students. It was Dr. Kataoka's that teachers work together in "research groups" to study the basics. Dr. Kataoka always taught the basics during her workshops. She constantly worked to improve her own tone and her own ability to produce the best tone with the greatest of ease. Now, we must try our best to teach and demonstrate to the best of our ability what we learned from Dr. Kataoka.
During this workshop we will all be able to watch a teacher choose a specific point and develop it. There will only be one teacher teaching at a time. All participants will be able to observe the same teaching. Dr. Kataoka did this at every workshop! We need to research together and learn from each other. Nothing is worse than being isolated. Every day there will be time set aside to have discussions about the teaching. All teachers are invited and encouraged to attend all sessions of the workshop. It is very important for all the teachers to attend all the sessions so that our discussions can be meaningful. It is very important that each individual observe and assess the lesson in their own way. If we all observe the same teacher, we can all have a more meaningful discussion. There is no time to waste.
Teachers bringing students must have a lesson (with a teacher of your choice) and must also attend all five days of the workshop. Please consider bringing students at any level, as we would like to have all books of the Suzuki repertoire represented at lessons.
STUDENTS: We will accept student applications for lessons and videotaped auditions for the Memorial Friendship Concert. Students and parents are welcome to observe lessons of other students throughout the workshop.
MEMORIAL FRIENDSHIP CONCERT: We would like to present the highest quality concert possible at this time. Teachers should make copies of the student application form as needed, and complete it for each student. Please submit a video tape of your student(s) performing two pieces -your first and second choices -and send to:
