Singing Lullabies
From Many Traditions
Dedicated to St. Agnes Guild,
Parish of the Holy Trinity, Nevada City, California
Remembering especially Cleo Dalton and Anita Zwingman
Advent, 1997, St. Agnes Guild invited me to bring a program of Christmas music to their luncheon. What do you choose from the wealth of compositions? How will you and your pianist partner present songs without a piano? Floyd, knowing my love of lullabies and my situation, thought of Christmas cradle songs. This honored perfectly Emmanuel, “God with us”, and a group of women dedicated to the nurturing of “God within us.” Floyd arranged and accompanied, on flute or autoharp, many traditional carols and hymns, most of which are still in the collection we call Love is Born. A few have been discovered since the first singing. Some wed newer musical tradition with older texts: David Hurd’s 1983 hymn, “Julion” and the Magnificat; Jack W. Burman’s 1984 hymn setting of the 1884 spiritual, “Poor Little Jesus.” Our singing of an Advent hymn by Charles Wesley to I-to Loh’s 1970 hymn, “Beng-Li” is new, Advent, 2002.
