Introduction
In Twinkle Variation B we are enlarging our pallette of colors to use at the piano. Small short notes , larger and longer notes; all still beautiful, all still made with moving fingers, an extension of
TwinkleVariationA. The rythymic pattern is sycopation.
Things To Listen for:
- A beautiful, clear short, small note - a big beautiful long note which lasts until a final beautiful very soft small note.
- AdvancedTwinkler? listen for arched phrases, echo in the middle section.
Things To Watch for:
- PlayingPosition - feet flat, balanced, sitting tall, shoulders and arms relaxed, spinal curves correct.
- HandPosition - thumb near the black key and over white keys at all times - wrist stable - moving fingers.
Practice Notes:
-
- Practice making your initial soft sound many, many times with finger 1.
- Practice lifting (extending your thumb as in opening your hand) and then catching a big, beautiful sound many times.
- Next add going back into the key making a short, delicate, clear tone with no space between.
- Practice the whole pattern now, getting ready for each note. Here is the sequence: Ready is touch the note with the pad of the finger - go is move your finger gently into the key. Then get ready to catch a big beautiful sound by picking up the finger (not the hand) - go is move your finger quickly into the key so that it moves to the key bed with much energy. (This is not a "hit" or a "push" nor should there be any downward energy used). Listen to your big beautiful sound while you get ready to play again by letting the key go far enough up so that you can replay the note but not so far that the sound stops. Go is moving the finger in very gently for the last little bounce.
- Now play the whole variation doing Ready... Go! for the first note only in each pattern.
- Play the whole variation without stopping (like the recording) for fun!
- M. S.
- Do not start Left hand work until you have can play all of the Twinkles well with your Right hand.
- Then, use the same procedure for the Left hand.
- If you are right-handed, please practice the Left hand even more that you do the Right hand.
