Good Playing Position is essential for the production of good tone. The steps to performance are
TheBow,
RestPostion?, and
ReadyPosition?. Good
PlayingPosition is simply maintaining
ReadyPosition? while playing.
Balance is Basic!
- To be balanced at the piano, pianists, especially children, need first of all to be seated at the correct height.
- The elbows, when the HandPosition is good, must be at or slighly above the level of the keys.
- The upper arms should be perpendicular to the floor, the forearms parallel.
- Both feet should be flat on the floor or the FootStool? about as far apart as the shoulders with the knees under the keys.
- Sit on the buttocks only, not the thighs. Lean foward slightly so that some of your weight is on your feet. You will be able to play the top note of the piano with your left little finger and the bottom note with your right little finger, keeping your balance, if you are sitting correctly.
- Hold your head high. "Sit like a king!" SenseiHarukoKataoka said to me at my first lesson.
- The shoulders should be back and relaxed.
- The spinal curves must be correct, especially in the lumbar region.
Only when you are in Good Playing Position are you able to breath fully.
