From the beginning, Schinichi Suzuki? encouraged teachers and parents to maximize performance opportunities for students. In his violin method, he established a number of graduation levels to mark publicly the growing abilities of children throughout Japan. In his later years, he listened to over 10,000 taped graduation pieces per year while "practicing" calligraphy writing each graduation certificate.

The SierraBranch? of the Suzuki Music Association of California? holds Graduation Recitals twice a year, generally between the warm dry season and the cool wet season (okay, Spring and Fall). Our official statement:

"The purpose of Graduation is to continually raise the standards of students and teachers, to provide incentive for in-depth study, polish and review of the repertoire, and to provide a means of recognition for students who have achieved certain goals."

Here in Northern California, we follow a slightly modified version of the list used by the Piano Department at the TalentRearchInstitute?, Matsumoto, Japan.
