Ridin' With Rick

NateRickFlightOne
Check out Nate's cool shades!

Hey Rick!

Could I move back to the top of the list? I'm ready to fly!!!

-- NatePerryThistle - 07 Sep 2004

How about any Saturday or Sunday morning, Sep or Oct 2004?

-- FloydPerryThistle - 11 Sep 2004

OK, Floyd, you're next. When are we going?

Floyd is next in line for a flight. When are we going?

-- RickHarmon 7 July 2004

Hmmmm...I'm up for it, but there seems to be some cloud obscuration along the coast. Keep an eye on it, and call me if the coast is clear. (I've always wanted to say that!)
RickHarmon - 15 July 2004

Shelter Cove socked in - crowded calendar today - let's try next weekend frown

-- FloydPerryThistle - 17 Jul 2004

Nate and Rick enjoy their first flight together.

Reinette? and Rick fly to Willows for a HUGE dinner.

I love the fact that y'all are excited about flying, too.

I had a chuckle when leaving the Chico airport, where the exam took place. When I was ready to leave, I radioed the tower, saying "Chico Tower, Cessna 7042F is at runup 13L, student pilot....er, correction, brand new private pilot, VFR to Grass Valley, ready for departure."

Tower controller came back with "Congratulations, 42F, cleared for takeoff 13L, straightout departure approved."

As I taxied on to the runway, I heard the controller say to another aircraft "Beechcraft 48R, taxi to 13L, hold short for America's newest pilot."

Floyd, you're in. Destination? -- RickHarmon

Mmmm... Can you smell the fish and chips? My dream destination: (Mmmm... I can drool just thinking about the Fish and Chips smile )
Shelter Cove and the "Lost Coast" -- but I'd settle for Sutter Buttes.
-- FloydPerryThistle - 17 Jun 2004

FloydPerryThistle is in! Start dreaming of lemons and tartar sauce. -- RickHarmon

HEY! I feel left out. I want an airplane ride too. I say we go to Pago Pago! I've never been there. smile -- KathiaZolfaghari - 18 Jun 2004

Sure wish I could, dear, but the distance is a little outside the range of my airplane! I like the way you dream big, though! -- RickHarmon

Hey, you're not on the sign-up sheet! How 'bout exciting Stockton, CA? -- RickHarmon 7 Jul 2004

Where does PegDart want to go? -- RickHarmon

Peggy? Oh, Peggy? -- RickHarmon

Where does JoyPerryThistle want to go? -- RickHarmon

Joy epecially likes looking down on things, for perspective, like the satellite pictures, you know? She needs perspective. so... My favorite drive is up 20 and over the summit on 80...detour over lake Tahoe??..89 to Sierraville and back the 49 loop...or vice versa. Maybe I would just like to go up and look around home. But where would we eat? -- JoyPerryThistle - 25 Jun 2004

Glad to see eating is important to you, too, Joy. We could do a local sightseeing tour, then fly to Red Bluff for lunch. I hear the restaurant there is pretty good. -- RickHarmon

The Red Bluff restaurant is upstairs with a good view of the runway. We can criticize the other pilots. Downside? It's Red Bluff. Flat, hot and boring. Rancho Murietta has a Mexican restaurant within a quarter mile of the field. http://www.airnav.com/airport/KRIU

How far can we go? How much does it cost?

In answer to the range question: distance is a function of time and money. I can only accept half the gas money...figure 9 bucks an hour or so at 90-100 mph.

-- RickHarmon

To figure a reasonable contribution for the fuel try this formula: divide the distance by 100 (miles per hour) and then multiply the result by 10. For example: 150 miles might take about 1.5 hours (at best). Move that decimal point over and it looks a lot like a $15.00 tip is in order. Easy!

(Did I do that right Rick - You mean it costs $20 an hour in fuel to fly your wonderful, but little airplane, and as a non-comercial pilot you can accept reimbursment for up to half of the fuel cost?)

-- NatePerryThistle

Nice rule of thumb, assuming no winds. As the fine folks at Ford say, "Your mileage may vary." Actual flying costs are $59/hour, but my interpretation of the rules {FAR 61.113(c)} are that I may accept no more than 50% of the costs incurred for fuel, oil, landing fees, and tie down fees. So basically, I pay $49/hour, you pay $10/hour, unless we're charged for landing or parking. (Pretty unlikely to happen.) You see why the tradition is that the passenger pays for lunch! Good deal for y'all!

Flight History

Nate is confirmed for a flight, where are we going to go? -- RickHarmon - 31 May 2004

So, ah... what's our acceptable radius? I've always wanted to fly into the HotSprings? -- Sierraville Dearwater Airport is a stones throw from the hot water. I do feel compelled to mention that the report of the runway is:

"asphalt, in poor condition SEVERE CRACKS IN PAVEMENT"

(and it is accurate about the number of aircraft based there: One smile ) so maybe that's not the best field to go for. Still, it's a fantasy to fly there, and would be nice to know what kind of trip it is. -- NatePerryThistle - 17 Jun 2004

NatePerryThistle is in! Sierraville it is, unless I find out the cracks are large enough to swallow my landing gear. Do please dress formally. I like this outfit:

Thanks Rick... embarrassment

We flew, but not to Sierraville. For the record, I did not wear this outfit. -- NatePerryThistle - 06 Jul 2004

I'll vouch for that, I nearly cancelled the flight due to informal attire. RickHarmon 07 Jul 2004

ReinetteSenum? had chicken-fried steak at Nancy's airport cafe in Willows. Neither she nor Rick could finish their meal. Large steak, potatos/rice, bread, veggies, soup, salad and dessert--8 bucks. I don't think I could cook it at this price at home. -- RickHarmon
