San Francisco Values
I love living in San Francisco. Frankly, I can't wait for the rest of the country to catch up. I'm quite impressed with
this rebuttal to the
three dirty words: "
San Francisco Values."

GOES Eclipse
I learned something new today (always do):
"Near the Vernal (Spring) and Autumnal (Autumn) Equinoxes the Earth disk will periodically block out the sun, from a geostationary satellite perspective."
The satellite's instruments are solar powered... without the sun light the instruments actually shut down. Neat.
GOES Eclipse Schedules are available.
You'll have to go looking for the "Info: About_Satellite_Eclipse" link on the
NRL GEOS pages if you're intrested. (It's a whole
JavaScript? pop-up to a Word doc thing. Ugh.)

IE Conditional Comments
If you've ever tried to get CSS working in something like IE 5 AND a modern reasonably coopertive Web browser you should know about
IE Conditional Comments. They'll save you some hair.
One of those things I had to go looking for again. Thought I'd record it here for posterity.

Pretty impressive:
http://mgno.com/.
There is an ISP still running in downtown New Orleans. They're blogging, chatting, and running a live video feed while they try to keep themselves alive. There are oodles of pictures. Do realize that they're on generated power, and that their upstream providers have been been falling off. The connection seems to be spotty at times, be patient.

My friend Spot and I were talking about consumption of resources and population and we got to talking about this Web site that
Pops turned me on to:
the ecological footprint quiz. I was suprised that it took me some time to find the site through the search engines so, here is the link for reference.
By the way, if everyone on the planet lived like me, we would need 4.1 planets to sustain our lifestyle.

I draw your attention once again to
BuzzTracker and the very interesting way that it shows our (English language) world news focus on major events. On the
17th of August we are focused on the
Gaza Strip. The last major world focus was on
London after the
July 7th, 2005 London bombings.
Checkout the
BuzzTracker feed to appreciate the last seven days together.

I contributed to the
Bricolage project recently by installing a
TWiki for the community. A user asked on the mailing list,
David Wheeler offered some space on the server, and I foolishly volunteered.
Anyway, there is another TWiki out there to play with.

You may specify what color(s) and font(s) you would like to see the site in... almost. There are two "gotchas":
- You must be registered and authenticated
- The IP tracking mechanism used will break down if:
- Your dynamically assigned address changes
- You use Network Address Translation.
Yes, I agree, this does seem to make this feature pretty lame. We could make it much more predictable if we required authentication to even
view a page. Seems heavy handed to me. Another option is cookies... anyone block cookies? Yeah, I thought so...
