Conclusion
Andre was presented by his gift today, which amounted to a round-trip ticket to anywhere he wants to go plus over $6300 in funds. His favorite gift, though, turned out to be seeing his best friend, who he hadn't seen in over three years. Personally, I don't think the rest of the gift really sank in yet, he was so taken with seeing his friend (he kept shrieking like a little girl and, quite frankly, it was a bit embarassing).
Rumor has it you may see a half-century year old Kung Fu master walking the Outback sometime in the next year. Or perhaps sunning on a glistening beach in Bali.

We currently have $3400 in donations. The 20th is just around the corner so if you are going to send one (this is voluntary, so ignore Wayne's menacing offers to work out) do it soon.
We're still hoping to get to $5000, so if you haven't taken action yet, please do.
If you have a favorite dish to bring on the 21st we are doing a pot luck of sorts. Remember to leave it in your car in a cooler or he'll be suspicious. Reports are that his intuition is on high alert so everybody empty your minds.
One last item... If you'd like a personal (brief) message to be included with the card, write it out and get it to me (by mail) or give it to Barbara. We'll place them inside the card in a pocket so he can read them later at his leisure.

The Details
Andre's having his 50th birthday on January 28th. He's given so much to so many of us, and it seemed time to give him something back. The plan: to realize his dream of going on a walkabout in a foreign country.
So far...
We have an open-ended round trip ticket, thanks to a few creative and generous people who pooled together frequent flyer miles.
We need...
... a total of $5000 to cover his expenses during the trip. We have $1500 in donations to date and commitments for another $1500.
... commitments from higher belts to take responsibilty for teaching his classes while he's away on this walkabout (this would be his greatest concern).
... offers of help to his administrative staff during his absence (backup for trouble shooting any computer problems and getting equipment and or people to classes).
The Plan
On January 21st, after the belt ceremony, we'll surprise Andre with the gift package. His best friend is flying in from the East Coast specially to present it--he'll arrive after the ceremony and read a message from all of us (including what we're giving him and why).
Then we party. We'll have food and beverages at the studio. Plus a cake, because what's a party without cake? For food, we're thinking Chinese (Andre's favorite). Any offers of help with this will be
gratefully accepted.
